Annual Report

A Celebration of Progress

Dear Sponsors and Friends:

More than half a century ago, the Mid Mon Valley faced a frightening reality. The Donora Wire Works was permanently shut down. And with that, more than 5,000 people lost their jobs.

Valley leaders knew the shutdown of the Donora Wire Works would not be the last economic challenge the region would face. And one leader, the president of Pittsburgh Steel, proposed a new organization to meet that challenge.

The Mon Valley Progress Council, called for by Allison Maxwell in the fall of 1964, continues to meet economic challenges faced by our region. What was the Donora Wire Works is now a thriving industrial park.

More than sixty miles of the Mon Valley/ Fayette Expressway, a project led by the Progress Council, are now complete. The Mon Valley/ Fayette Expressway extends from I-68 in West Virginia to PA Route 51 in Allegheny County and the Progress Council has proposed an innovative multi-modal concept for completion of the Expressway in Allegheny County. There also has been successes and progress on a range of other projects and initiatives.

Take a moment to read through this report to see what we’ve done over the years and in 2014.

There’s a reason that the slogan for the Progress Council “Progress is…” has three dots at the end. It’s because what “Progress is...” is ever changing and requires attention to new issues and opportunities.

Yes, we still face considerable economic challenges. And our challenges are not the same as they were 50 years ago. Challenges we will face today call for new strategies and sometimes even a new direction. Through the Progress Council’s executive committee and board of directors, we will continue to explore every possible way to promote continued improvement in our region.

With your help and financial support, the Mon Valley Progress Council can continue to develop new ideas and initiatives to complete the phrase “Progress is…”

Join us as we continue this journey.

Sincerely,
John Easoz
President
